Porbeagle Spirit

Who are we ?
My name is Paul Abaut. From an early age, the ocean has been both my playground and my classroom. Trained as a marine biologist and driven by a lifelong passion for diving, I have always sought to understand the underwater world by experiencing it from within.
Porbeagle Spirit was born from this dual vocation: to unite marine science and ethical scuba diving. Through each dive, the project aims to create a living bridge between scientific research and the field—where observation, respect for marine life, and knowledge come together to better understand and protect the ocean

A bridge between two worlds
Too often, scientific research and field practices evolve separately.
With Porbeagle Spirit, I wanted to build a bridge between divers and scientists, so that every trip at sea could actively contribute to our understanding of marine life.
In collaboration with the association Des Requins et Des Hommes, we collect data, observe, and document in order to advance research on the porbeagle shark (Lamna nasus) and the marine ecosystems of the North Atlantic.
An approach shaped by experience
My professional journey has led me to work both in the field and in the laboratory, allowing me to understand the needs of both worlds:
Researchers, who often lack regular access to certain areas or observation periods.
Passionate divers, who want to go beyond recreational exploration.
Porbeagle Spirit was created to meet both expectations: by organizing responsible dives that contribute to scientific research, and by offering divers the opportunity to become active participants in citizen science.
A mission: observe, share, protect
Each dive is designed to respect the animal and its natural habitat.
We do not seek interaction at all costs—our approach favors passive observation, under strict safety and non-disturbance conditions.
What we are building with Porbeagle Spirit is a new way of diving: more conscious, more committed, and deeply connected to marine life and science.
Porbeagle Spirit is not just a diving project.
It is a platform for awareness and scientific collaboration, led by a marine biologist who believes in the power of field observation to better understand and protect the wild world.
